Xiu-Qin, an ordinary Chinese woman, bears the name of all patriarchal hopes for a girl from the generation before revolution that now represents an aging China - Xiu (“秀”), “beautiful”; and Qin (“勤”), “diligent”. She resents what she represents.
40 years ago, she left her rural home on a ship to escape the patriarchal hopes that befell her. 40 years later, Xiu-Qin travels in search of an abandoned river harbor, the place her ship took off. She struggles to reconcile her identity as a woman and to resolve the psychological "debt" of her urban migration, and IN SEARCH OF THE LOST HARBOR observes from a distance.
